What Really Causes Heart Disease?

For years doctors across the country believed that a high cholesterol diet was the leading cause of heart disease. They were wrong. Dr. Dwight Lundell, a heart surgeon with over 25 years experience is setting the record straight. "Simply stated, without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped." Lundell, My Science Academy, 2012.

But what causes inflammation? Inflammation is your body's defense against toxins, bacteria and virus. However, consistently exposing the body to toxins, such as those in processed foods, causes chronic inflammation. The doctor recommended lowfat diets to treat conditions like obesity and high cholesterol are actually putting more of these harmful toxins into our bodies, and causing an excess of simple, highly processed carbohydrates and omega-6 vegetable oils.

Dr. Lundell offers one simple solution to healing inflammation and in turn, improvin heart health, "...Returning to foods closer to their natural state. To build muscle, eat more protein. Choose carbohydrates that are very complex such as colorful fruits and vegetables. Cut down on or eliminate inflammation- causing omega-6 fats like corn and soybean oil and the processed foods that are made from them." Lundell, My Science Academy, 2012.
